Nicola Prinsen
Nicola Prinsen, an artist based on Salt Spring Island, has been sculpting for over 15 years. Initially trained in ceramics, she later focused on figurative and portrait sculpture. Over the past five years, her work has drawn inspiration from her island surroundings, including the forests, rural agriculture, ocean, and native wildlife. Nicola’s sculptures, whether in clay or bronze, capture the unique forms and personalities of animals like otters, cows, crows, and goats. Through detailed studies, she skillfully blends realism with playful distortion and exaggeration, creating a balance between personality and simplicity. Each sculpture, from a cow with an impossible stance to a precisely rendered creature, showcases her dedication to refining form while ensuring the animal’s essence is unmistakable. There is both humor and depth in her work—an invitation to look closer and discover the artist's serious intention beneath her lighthearted subjects.
