Bev Rodin
Bev Rodin is an internationally collected Canadian artist represented in both public and private collections with an extensive exhibition history from coast to coast, Victoria, BC to Charlottetown, PEI. Bev is also an award winning watercolour painter, participating in International travelling exhibitions in Canada, France and the United States. She has exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy and is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) and the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA).
She has deep roots in her aesthetic appreciation for landscape that started as a child summering on a prairie farm with its vast skies and working in her grandmothers vegetable garden to the rugged wilderness that surrounded the mining towns where she lived as a child in northern Quebec and Ontario. The wonder and life force of an heirloom peony and the mesmerising meditative movement and reflections of water are messages to be discovered in Bev’s paintings. The paintings created are not about Bev herself but express the awe and wonder of the universal everyday simple experiences of observing the evolving beauty and metamorphosis of life from the smallest plant to grand vistas.
Bev has shared her experience as a painter and designer in teaching two and three dimensional design, drawing, space planning, colour theory, watercolour painting and portfolio development as well as mentoring. She has a PhD in arts education and an MFA in studio practise. Bev has also volunteered her time to serve on conservation boards.
With her husband, her many adventures have included hiking into Havasu canyon and whitewater canoeing in Ontario and Quebec. Bev is a proud wife and grandmother with a love of family, music, songs, good food, dancing, reading, gardening, swimming and hiking.
Bev’s elegant and accomplished paintings balance between abstraction and realism with the use of gestural brushwork, Japanese brush painting, traditional and contemporary painting techniques, multiple glazes and intuitively created expressive effects. The paintings are based on real life experiences, sketches and memory. Bev’s art reveals the poetic and the beautiful in the natural phenomena that surround all life. She is internationally known for three main themes: Forest Light Series, Shoreline Series and Botanicals. Each original archival painting is finished on the edges and ready to hang unframed.
Artist Statement / Dèclaration d’artiste
Good art like music plays forever and I endeavour to create imaginative, spiritual and individual work that does not lose its potency over time. I believe the space between the brushstrokes is where intuition liberates the intellect. Both are essential. My predominantly medium and large-scale paintings in acrylic medium on canvas, explore unusual lighting, transparency, abstraction, universality, movement, colour and connections between them. These simple notions provide both the grand gestures and the details of my work. I am also interested in the universal human responses and relationships to natural landscapes, water and the beauty of natural geometries. I am well known for three dominant themes or series: Forest Light, Shorelines and Peonies/Botanicals. Other works include internationally award winning watercolours and plein air small works.
