WINTER SETTLES IN
“Living where I do in BC’s interior, I am surrounded by many ranches, and I love sketching and painting the many historic structures dotting the landscape. I remember the smell of weathered logs and hay as well as leather in the log barn at a ranch I worked at as a horse guide, years ago. This sketch showcases an old, weathered barn on a cold winter day and I love the pink-cerulean combo in the sky. I feel I can wrap my style around such subject matter. As I continue to encounter these weathered structures, I am driven to paint them before they are gone.”
Cameron Bird creates contemporary landscape and wildlife paintings that feel both ruggedly natural and boldly expressive, bridging traditional Canadian landscape art with a modern, almost abstract sensibility.
His landscapes are vibrant, simplified, and atmospheric, often capturing the changing of weather and shifting of light. Rather than photographic realism, the scenes feel distilled; reduced to essential shapes, light, and color.
Unlike purely studio-based artists, Bird paints from firsthand outdoor observation (en plein air). He draws from numerous trips spent hiking, fishing, and packhorse guiding through the landscape often sketching and painting directly on location. This grounding in real environments gives authenticity, even when colors and forms are stylized.
Whether you are a frequent collector or just discovering his work for the first time, these paintings offer a wonderful opportunity to take home a piece of the Canadian wilderness.
