CALM AND CURIOUS
For fifteen years from 2009-2024, John led bear photography tours to Tsylos Park Lodge in British Columbia. One of his favourite encounters during all of those trips was the day John and his photo tour participants were eating lunch in the dining room during a break off of the river, when a mother grizzly simply known as ‘Mom’ and her yearling cub walked up the lawn in front of the small lodge and plopped themselves down for a nap less than thirty metres from where all the photographers’ camera bags were.
As John and his clients filtered out of the dining room toward their gear, the grizzlies lay there calmly, curiously glancing up from time to time. For nearly forty-five minutes, the photographers sat quietly watching this bear and her cub as Mom sat quietly watching them (with her cub asleep in behind her).
