DEEP ROOTS #26-033
Canadian artist Floyd Elzinga is known for transforming raw industrial materials into refined interpretations of the natural world. Working primarily with steel, Elzinga carefully cuts, shapes, and layers metal surfaces to build dimensional landscapes that capture the quiet power of the Canadian wilderness.
Each piece begins with hand-cut steel elements that are individually treated through processes such as grinding, heat coloring, oxidation, and patination. These techniques create the rich earth tones, weathered textures, and subtle variations that evoke mountains, forests, and water. By layering these components in relief, Elzinga constructs depth within the composition, allowing the landscape to emerge almost like a sculptural painting.
A signature feature of his work is the stylized tree form—precisely cut and assembled—standing in the foreground as both a focal point and a symbol of endurance within the landscape. Light interacts with the polished and patinated surfaces, causing the piece to shift visually throughout the day.
Blending sculpture, metalwork, and landscape imagery, Elzinga’s work bridges contemporary design and the timeless beauty of nature. The result is a striking wall sculpture that celebrates the rugged textures and quiet spaces of the Canadian landscape while showcasing the artist’s exceptional craftsmanship.
