Inuit Sculpture

Since our beginning in 1974, Inuit art has been a central focus at Canada House Gallery. In their original context, Inuit carvings were of a utilitarian nature decorated with artistic designs. As European and American whalers frequented traditional hunting grounds, these objects became a source of income. These “trade sculptures” represented animals important to Inuit survival: whales, polar bears, seals and birds. Materials include marine ivory, various native stones, whalebone and antler. Inuit sculpture, as it known today, is a reflection of Arctic communities opening to allow greater artistic production and access to an appreciative international audience. Canada House Gallery is proud to represent the talent of renowned and aspiring sculptors from across the Arctic.
