The genesis of this work began one summer afternoon on a trip through an archipelago of Islands south of Killarney. I beached my canoe and set up camp, and while wandering the shoreline looking for firewood, noticed a crest of dark mica jutting out of the water. Its thin, striking profile compelled me to dig into the mud and sand until the stone was fully unearthed.  Back in the studio, I spent some months playing with this magnificent base and it’s complexity of facets, layers, angles and curves, finally deciding to cantilever the rock with the black mica crest on top, and sculpt two kayaks positioned to suggest they were heading out to sea, passing land’s end.
