As John and Porter put some recyclable cans into a bin near their trailer, they came face-to-face with one of the largest male grizzly bears in Banff, the notorious Split Lip. John quickly determined that Split Lip was more interested in eating dandelions than in people, so he got Porter back to the trailer and the family jumped into their vehicle to photograph Split Lip at a little meadow full of dandelions near the campground entrance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs John photographed, Jenn suddenly exclaimed,\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“There’s another bear coming!”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn turned just in time to see the Boss, Banff’s most legendary bear, and the most famous bear in Canada, as he stalked across into the meadow and charged Split Lip. Her untimely death on the Trans-Canada Highway in August 2008 captivated the nation and was covered by media outlets across the country and internationally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn spent 140 days in the field over the 2007-08 winter following and photographing Delinda and her wolf family. He described his experiences with Delinda in his book, Tall Tales, Long Lenses:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“She was the first wild wolf I had ever really known, the first wolf I ever got good photographs of. And she was certainly the first wolf I had ever truly cared for.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDelinda had been a perfect fit for the Bow Valley. She had learned to live with people without getting into trouble with them. She had bridged that fine line between being a wild wolf and being a wolf that could deal with most of what the Bow Valley placed in her way, including all the tourists and towns and transportation corridors.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn December 2009, this photo of Delinda was selected for the cover of Canadian Geographic’s first annual Wildlife issue, which later became the magazine’s best-selling issue of all time. While some of them, like this male, noticed the big glass eyeball sticking out of the branches, none of the wolves recognized it as being a human object.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wolves bedded down just seventy metres from John, and for three hours, he blissfully hung out with the pack. As part of the project, John had to find wolf rendezvous sites – areas where the wolf family would move their pups after the denning period. These areas were often secluded and far from roads or human trails, and were almost always guarded by at least one adult wolf or babysitter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn painstakingly learned where these rendezvous sites were and figured out how to photograph at them without disturbing the wolves. They were fortunate enough to spot her five more times, which all led to extended sessions loosely following the two cats as they hunted snowshoe hares.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image was taken the second time the photographers found the pair of lynx, five days after their first encounter. John and Brandon had split up following different sets of tracks, so John found the mother first, and while following her, she killed a snowshoe hare. After consuming half of it, she stepped aside and let her kitten take over.
