Thrill of Winter - Sarah Martin
The theme of this show is creating a thread to bridge our stories to the past. I researched journals from Western Canadian mountaineers and explorers from the 1920s and 1930s. These journals showed a pattern of intrepid spirits, that I hope to connect to these paintings. Each painting has a journal entry hand-copied by me on the back, that I hope will tie the painting, and the viewer to the past. To remind us we are on a continuum and that the Canadian spirit of adventure is still alive and well!
“It is the people’s right to have primitive access to the remote places of safest retreat from the fever and the fret of the market place and beaten tracks of life.” Elizabeth Parker, Canadian Alpine Journal, 1907
