The Old Arts building (1915) on the University of Alberta Campus is one of my favourite buildings in Edmonton with it’s neo-classical style, deeply carved acanthus cornice and combination of sandstone and red brick. it is covered with mature Virginia creeper, and in the fall the intricate network of scarlet leaves are beguiling. The warm evening sun reflects off of the building opposite and filters through mature trees before painting the façade with dappled light. I walked by this building every day while studying fine art at the UofA, and always felt it was a piece of Europe in the prairies. It is close to my home in Edmonton and I still visit to admire its stately elegance and to see how its character changes under different light conditions.
