Rick Taylor

Rick Taylor has fished and hunted all his life, and an early interest in taxidermy led to a full time career. After graduating in 1971 from the University of Calgary with a B.Sc. in Zoology, Rick worked with the Calgary Museum as a taxidermist and display artist.

By 1975, Rick was operating a commercial taxidermy studio and handling wildlife from all corners of the globe. Rick was intrigued by the wildlife bronze sculpture he saw at the many sporting conventions he attended, and he decided to try his hand at bronze casting. The realistic portrayal of wildlife involves not only technical expertise but also a reverence for the subject. People who have spent countless hours observing wildlife develop this feeling. The experience he gained while hunting in many countries, combined with a wealth of reference material, has given Rick a thorough understanding of his subjects, which is evident in his sculptures.

Rick's outstanding lifelike portrayal of wildlife is very well received at his shows nationwide. His limited edition bronze sculpture can be found in many private and corporate collections throughout North America.

In the last five years, Rick was commissioned and created six life-sized monuments of western big game animals. They are installed on the Alaska Highway at Ft. Nelson, B.C. and Whitehorse, Yukon. They are also installed at Smithers, Salmo and Radium, BC. In May of 2003, Rick completed and installed a 2X lifesize cougar at the new west wing of Mount Royal College in Calgary, AB. "Home of the Cougars" was sponsored by CANA Construction and is a tribute to all the athletic teams and their new facility. The next large piece of work will be a whitetailed deer group in the City of Edmonton for the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society.

The newest gallery sculpture is titled "The Proving Grounds"; a powerful bronze depicting an agitated bison bull, pawing the ground, tail raised, and ready to charge!

ARTIST STATEMENT

"The commitment one makes to excel in a chosen field is of course very personal. Standards and abilities vary. I have promised myself to be as faithful to nature as possible and try to recreate some of the magnificent wildlife that I have been privileged to observe, admire and come to love; hopefully, some of these feelings come through for others as they experience my sculptures. I know that I am indeed fortunate to live the life I do and to love my work, so I thank those who support me and make it all possible."
