Martin Reynard was exposed to the jewellery arts at an early age by his mother, a jewellery maker who worked primarily in copper and silver. After completing his first university degree in 1968, he emigrated to Canada. He went on to complete Master and
Doctorate degrees in Canada.
Martin Reynard's interest in metal sculpture and design led him to the jewellery arts following graduation, and he worked from 1972 - 1980 as an independent artisan in Ontario before his subsequent move to Victoria.
Since then, his work has appeared in many stores and galleries in Victoria, Vancouver, Banff, and other cities across Canada and the U.S.
Martin Reynard's work takes a very untraditional approach and incorporates a wide variety of materials,
including titanium and niobium. He particularly enjoys processes that are only partly controllable, such as fusion, reticulation, and the patination of metals. Within the field of jewellery design, he finds a meeting place of art, chemistry, engineering
and the magic of alchemy. He has come to refer to himself as “a maker of aesthetic objects” and believes there is no such thing as “precious metals”, only precious objects.
A note on titanium:
Titanium is a high-tech ultra-light metal that
has remarkable strength and is 100% hypo-allergenic. The colours on titanium are produced by electro-chemical or thermal treatment, resulting in the development of an oxide film that refracts light. These colours are permanent and can easily be restored
by gently washing with soapy water if necessary.
