'LOON RISING' (FORMERLY 'ALGONQUIN EMBRACE')
For me, the wildest and most impressive of all the wilderness sounds comes from the Common Loon. When I hear them while canoeing in Algonquin Park, I stop all activity, embraced by their unearthly cry, strange and mournful, half laughing, half wailing. I never tire of their habit of popping up in a lake just beside you, then, in a flash re-emerging at a great distance. Algonquin Embrace is a departure from the detailed imagery common to my work, and the surface texture and patina reminds me more of a soapstone carving than a cast bronze. |
