In the middle of winter one thinks there is little colour, but when looking closely and long enough, colour emerges. These leaves clinging to their branches were by the sun were an unexpected surprise on a ski up to Boom Lake in the Kootenay Valley. In reality they were soft burnt orange, but I chose instead to use saturated crimson and cadmium to contrast the cool values of the shadows and background. The relatively smooth surface of 140 lb. stretched watercolour allowed me to paint around the delicate crystal shapes of frost.
