This forest in Prospector Valley in Kootenay National Park experienced a devastating fire that burned for 40 days and razed all but the elegant spires of lodgepole pine. Now there is verdant regeneration - fresh new trees reaching for the sun. We have skied this valley many times, and the young vegetation is taller and more lush every time we are there - a lovely reassurance of the ability of nature to rebuild. The use of black and white underscores the graphic quality of charred black trees and brilliant snow, while color evokes the warmth of the sun in the otherwise monochromatic winter.
