Skiing across the Sunshine Meadows in Banff National Park is a favourite trek of ours. One afternoon in November, I was lucky enough to experience an abundance fresh snow and the larches still holding on to their golden needles. The low angle of sun at that time of year produces long shadows across Rock Isle Lake, graphic lines that accentuate the broad landscape. The very long shadows of small trees is a kind of metaphor for the strength and impact of these hearty alpine trees. By using black and white for most of the landscape and watercolour for the larch, the trees appear more prominent and form multiple focal points.
