YASMEEN GHAURI WAS PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL WAVE OF SUPERMODELS FROM THE LATE EIGHTIES AND EARLY NINETIES. SHE DIDN'T MODEL FOR LONG BUT WAS FEATURED IN MANY MAJOR CAMPAIGNS, NOTABLY VERSACE. SHE WAS A PROMINENT FACE WHEN PEOPLE 'OF COLOUR' WERE NOT COMMON IN HIGH FASHION. I THINK SHE IS ANOTHER UNSUNG CANADIAN ICON, STILL FAMOUS ABROAD AND VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN AT HOME.
Lemay’s work combines the imagery of fashion magazines with the techniques of the masters to create a style he calls Pop Realism, reinvigorating figure painting with an exploration of modern fashion and celebrity culture. Uniquely, the artist divides the canvas into a grid, painting square by square, row by row to create a subtly digitized effect which is completely hand-painted. All works are oil on canvas.
