Jennifer Annesley, CSPWC, BFA

Jennifer Annesley is an established Canadian artist from Alberta practicing full time since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta in 1989. Her work resides in over 900 collections worldwide and receives international recognition through juried exhibitions and fine art publications. Jennifer’s drawings and paintings are characterized by elegant detail, dramatic light and atmosphere achieved through her unconventional use of watercolour, charcoal and acrylic.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“Painting is a way to understand and reveal a subject’s nature and construction and to process, distill and re-live experiences. Through careful study and drawing I try to unravel the
complexity of a three-dimensional form, whether cathedral, mountain or everyday object. I re- construct and reinterpret on the two-dimensional plane by using deliberate variations in perspective, colour, contrast and detail. The architectural structure and surface of each subject is further transformed and articulated by dramatic light, a central element in my imagery.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta provided me with a foundation in painting, draftsmanship and theory, as well as an appreciation for the aesthetic sensibilities of the Old Masters and for historic architecture, in contrast to the school’s partiality to modernism and abstract expressionism at that time. This tension led to a synthesis of the formal qualities of abstraction with highly naturalistic imagery in my work.

After working exclusively with oil and acrylic at University, I wanted to experiment with and challenge conventional notions of watercolour, using it for fully realized paintings beyond sketches or field work. My use of charcoal began in figure drawing classes at University, and I use it to render the spare elements of tone and line in counterpoint to precise detail, and to create dramatic emotional impact. Over the past 5 years, I have combined charcoal and watercolour to achieve a broader range of effects.

Working with the architecture, landscape and still life genres mirrors my personal life, having studied historic art and architecture, and being an avid traveller and outdoor adventure enthusiast. The juxtaposition of chaotic and primitive landscape with the order, refinement and relative safety of architectural spaces is a source of energy for my work. I explore the relationship between the perception of permanence of the natural or manmade landscape and the impermanence of weather and light conditions; how that relationship effects our experience, and how to communicate that in paint.

More broadly, my work reflects the current struggle with the loss of and migration away from our natural world to urban settings, and the dissonance we feel in appreciating the value and beauty of both worlds.”
