Jennifer Annesley, CSPWC, BFA

Jennifer Annesley is an award-winning Canadian visual artist whose work has captured international attention, is included in public, corporate, and private collections worldwide and has appeared in numerous major publications. Annesley is further recognized for pioneering an exclusive one-night exhibition, an annual event since 1994 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton.

Annesley draws inspiration from traveling to explore historic architecture and remote landscapes. Through her mastery and unconventional use of watercolour, acrylic and charcoal, she creates a remarkable sense of light, atmosphere and a seductive balance of elegance and power. Her focus on unusual light, shadow and texture creates exceptional drama in her architectural interiors, landscapes and still lifes.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
"I have been a full time artist practicing in Edmonton since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1989. My paintings and drawings are founded on a passion for the art and architecture of past centuries, a love of the natural world, and a fascination with the power of contrasts and opposites. My creative process is based on the exploration of historic architecture and landscape at home in Alberta and abroad, subsequently creating a visual experience that places the viewer into another place and time, inviting them to appreciate and contemplate these finite resources and their intrinsic beauty.

A background in fine arts provides me with a foundation in painting, draftsmanship, and theory. While studying at the University of Alberta, I became captivated with the ideas, techniques and sensibilities of the Old Masters, as well as historic architecture. In contrast, my studio time at University was mainly based in abstract expressionism. From this contrast was born a desire to combine the formal qualities of abstraction with highly naturalistic imagery. Some of my influences include Carravagio’s “Dark Manner” or “Tenebrism”– the use of stark contrasts of light and dark to hide or reveal certain forms, the renaissance concern with perspective; and John Singer Sargent’s deeply sensual use of colour.

My process begins by exploring a space and recording as many details about my experience with a camera and notebook. I search or wait for the transient moments of light that create strong contrasts, which emphasizes reality with sharp relief, and helps describe dimension, atmosphere, texture and time. In the studio, my technique is planned and disciplined, with the design and drawing stages a critical foundation. A large painting can take up to 300 hours and I produce approximately 10 to 15 major paintings each year.

Over the past 25 years of practice and study, I have come to believe that contrasts or opposites are the basis of perception, and can be a powerful expressive tool. Exploring thematic and visual contrasts or opposites (such as strength and fragility, permanence and transience, feminine and masculine,) and how they can be balanced and expressed through formal opposites (such as light and shadow, warm and cool colour), is central to my work.

The idea of contrasts and opposites is present in the materials I use, particularly in creating an illusion of strength and solidity with the delicate medium of watercolour on paper. After working extensively with oil and acrylic at University, I wanted to challenge the notions that watercolour is a medium restricted to preliminary sketches or field work, that it cannot render dark rich colours, and that it is by nature, delicate. My use of charcoal is a further distillation of the idea of contrasts, with the spare elements of light, dark, line and shade, contrasting with elegant detail rendered from a basic stick of charcoal. Recently, I have returned to acrylics on canvas in order to experiment with creating a more immediate and inviting space for the viewer to inhabit, rich with depth and surface texture at the same time.

Working with both architectural and landscape themes is another powerful contrast, reflecting my passions for both historical art and architecture, and outdoor adventure. The contrast of exploring pristine landscape through backpacking, canoeing, and backcountry skiing with the experience of exploring architecture and art through travel provides me with great energy and inspiration. The order, elegance, and safety of architectural spaces becomes even more pronounced and appreciated when contrasted with the chaotic and primitive landscape.

Though contrasting themes by nature, landscape and architecture suffer a similar fate; being neglected and abused by society. I feel that because of increasing urbanization and blind progress, society is becoming removed from landscape and historic architecture, therefore we are less likely to respect, enjoy and protect it. Through my work, I endeavor to stay connected with these spaces, and help convey their beauty and importance in our lives."
